If you’re not familiar, it is a 6 season drama (Hulu) based on Margaret Atwood’s novel published in 1985. The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian story set in a totalitarian regime (patriarchal theocracy, to be exact) called the Republic of Gilead, which violently overthrew the United States. Faced with plummeting birth rates and environmental crises, the fundamentalist government strips women of their rights. Fertile women are forced into sexual servitude as "Handmaids" to bear children for the ruling elite. The story follows June, a handmaid in Boston who had proven to be fertile as she had one child before the entrance of Gilead.

Despite its “light and fluffy” premise and rave reviews, I didn’t feel called to watch it until recently. The show was released in 2017, at the start of Trump America where things felt scary but it was just the beginning of our path towards theocracy. It’s now 2026. Nine years later, watching the headlines in our news while watching a “fictional” enactment of very similar actions taken by the Republic of Gilead leadership. It feels eerily familiar.

Friends and I laugh that we all “need to engage with more positive media”. Alas, we keep coming back to stories that are far from positive. I wasn’t sure what compelled me to start watching it recently.

Thanks for reading Lo and Behold! A nod to hope that things aren’t destined for the horrors we can imagine. Similar to the “true crime girlies” or dystopian fiction addicts, I think many of us are seeking evidence that justice can be served. And that there is room for possibility of a better outcome.

As a single woman, a homeowner, and knowledge worker myself. I would be one of the first enlisted at the mercy of the Republic of Gilead’s laws. Admittedly, I’m nearing the end of Season 3, so I don’t know what’s left of June’s story. But I see why I’m addicted to knowing more. I want to see her, us, prevail.

Some other stories that I’ve devoured recently, of parallel premise:

The Mad Wife by Meagan Church (book)

I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman (book)

Slewfoot by Brom (book)

To resistance <3

Thanks for reading Lo and Behold! I walked into the courthouse alone and left alone. Divorce finalized.

I didn’t want it, but it was really one of the best things that could have ever happened for me. This breakup experience was very traumatic, and so was the relationship. Between now and then, was a rather tenuous journey of self discovery. Alone, who am I?

Thanks for reading Lo and Behold! Not marked by a failed marriage but an iterative continuation of self discovery in relationship to others and the world around me. Knowing and loving self is now the foundation of which I discover how I relate to the world and those close to me. It’s a much different starting point than needing the validation of others to feel okay.

I don’t feel a need to be accepted by all. But where I’m accepted is where I want to be. There’s an ease to it. A light breeze.

This quote has been my measuring stick.

My alone feels so good, I’ll only have you if you’re sweeter than my solitude. - Warsan Shire

Interestingly, this story seems more challenging. But perhaps it’s just different. My coping mechanism is to do much of life alone, it’s felt much easier this way. Now, the challenge is stay true to myself in the company of others.

To not please others in sacrifice to myself. To not sacrifice others in service to myself. It’s been a distressing three years and I’ve done many things to feel well again. I tried so hard, that it occurred to me I was burned out on trying. It didn’t feel like depression, it just felt like an exhaustion of the soul that kept progressing. It felt like I couldn’t lift my arm to reach any farther, all I wanted was to just be where I was.

That was scary.

I’d experienced burnout in my working life, but this was a first I’d experienced it in my personal life. It dawned on me when in discussion with a dear friend, he mentioned his ability to focus and be disciplined with his self-care out of SELF-LOVE. That blew my mind.

I thought the opposite of burnout was “just” rest. And rest hasn’t been a concept I understood, nor something that was necessarily embraced in my family system. And the definition I have always had for discipline was that it was a means of punishment for wrongdoing. Wrongdoing being defined as just not doing enough.

Taking it way back, my early family dynamic was very much that of striving, creating and producing. As a family and as individuals, we did incredible things and accomplished so much. I’m grateful for that imprint because it’s been such a cool way to spend my days even into my adulthood. By now you can probably see where one would reach burnout if their only way of being was by doing more. yikes.

Moral of the story, I’m trying to wrap my head around the idea of being focused and disciplined in my actions out of self-love, not punishment. It’s actually very confusing for me. The imprint is so deep in my understanding of the world, myself and what it means to live.

I’m still personal growth focused (five books that I’m actively reading on my bedside table, I see you!) and I’m still doing the work associated with that, but it’s a lot more gentle. It involves a lot more checking in. I’m not trying to beat the shit out of myself to be better. I’m taking on growth as a way to love myself more. And that’s a big difference.

Thanks for reading Lo and Behold! Picking up my phone is a tick. Maybe nervous, bored, sad, excited is what keeps bringing me back. Yesterday, it was 125 pickups, the day before, 157. I carry a lot of shame here. Let’s be honest. I dream up all the badass things I could be creating and sharing with the world in that time. SO MUCH. There’s a vault of cool messages, art, world shattering ideas that are just hanging out behind my eyeballs. What’s happening in front of them? The scrolling through… other peoples ideas.

Daily I ask myself what it’s going to take for me to stop consuming. Or at least to create more balance in the input versus output. For 2023, I decided my theme would be focus for the sake of self-love. With focus, discipline is required. I don’t have much of that either, at least it’s not what I’m picking up impulsively. Distractions though, picking up those 125 times a day, at least.

It wasn’t until the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2023 that I realized the commitment I signed myself up for this year. Focus. Is. My. Theme. …Crap… Other years felt a lot more tangible, and this year is going to take dedication.

I’m sharing this because I KNOW I’m not alone in this. I’m hoping my “reveal” helps you. You’re not alone and frankly, I’m likely struggling just about as much as you are. If not more. Let’s do this together, for the betterment of our lives and frankly, the world.

Thanks for reading Lo and Behold! It’s something that if you’re around long enough, you take for granted. It’s not as sweet as the first times you come across it. Time and time again, you will be reminded of how special it is. It’s okay to need reminding, but do you stop and admire once you’ve been called to pay attention?

My heart breaks with every friend who degrades their brilliance. Not knowing how to love themselves. Why can I observe your shine, but all you see is the perceived dullness of your luster. It’s hard to bare witness. Because your shine is so great.

Every day I pray, that time comes to a head. Where the pain of seeing past their glowing personhood, seeking damage, draws to an end. That the pain is too great, and you’ll see your tendency to shine. Just like Adyashanti says.

Thanks for reading Lo and Behold! My younger brother was the opposite, he ran before he could walk. He broke all of his front teeth from falling, before they fully came in.

We all experience the world differently. Some observe. Some just go at it and see what happens. I use both.

A few years ago I decided I wanted to write a book called “It’s all data”. If you are close to me, you hear this phrase a lot. I may have even told you about the book idea. The concept was a collection of stories, specifically of experiences I’ve had while dating. My mind works much like a transducer, collecting moments in time to be used to paint a bigger picture later. I grab nuggets of information from each interaction and use them to steer me as life goes on.

Lately, I’m not sure these stories are fit for a book. I feel they need more flexibility and freedom, more than a rigidity of a binding can offer. So, here we are.

Thanks for reading Lo and Behold!
